How it Works
Trained volunteers visit our families in their homes quarterly, bringing new, high-quality, age-appropriate books for each child to add to the family’s home collection. During each visit, volunteers model parent-child interactions that enhance conversation and exploration around books.
Parents are also introduced to the latest research that shows reading, singing, and talking promotes brain development. For example, a description of the ‘serve and return’ technique that parents can use to stimulate brain growth is illustrated in the video below:
Loving, playful conversations and interactions accelerate a child’s brain growth, setting a firm foundation of early language acquisition and social and emotional health that has life-long benefits.
“I read with my daughter everyday. I want her to have the opportunities I did not have. I bring books with us everywhere…to the grocery store, to the park, in the car….reading is so important!”

Home Visits 2021
In 2021 Family Reading Partners’ volunteers made educational outreach visits to our 70 families every three months. During these home visits, we provided over 1,400 age-appropriate books for children from birth to five years old.
“Family Reading Partners is really helpful; for us a book is very expensive. It’s helping me with English too. I’ve seen that the books are useful with learning colors, patterns, alphabet and talking back and forth. When my FRP volunteer home visitor comes, it means I have another friend; I’m not alone so much.”
